A superb Flemish wine or cider wooden-staved jug C1890-1930 Ref.ME/2
From Flanders (in Belgium) comes this very handsome oak staved wine or cider jug. Apart from a ding on the spout - which is to be expected for its age - the jug remains in remarkably good condition.
The oak wooden staves (made by a skilled cooper) are secured by brass loops together with brass and copper nails. The wood shows a beautiful, rich patina, emphasizing the grain of the oak and none of the slats are loose, a testament to the skill of the cooper.
These jugs were used throughout Flanders and France, the French jugs being slightly narrower in shape. Difficult to accurately date, they were known to be in existence from the late 1890's right through to the 1930's.
The jug stands a full 33cm high to the tip of the spout. with a diameter of 16cm and weighs just over 1100 grams.
