World War 2 Hallicrafters SX-28 Super SKYRIDER Receiver Circa 1943
I am the first to admit that I know very little about electronics and radios in particular, so, with thanks to Wikimedia, the following report on the SX-28 Super Skyrider, is below -
In July 1940, the Hallicrafters Company announced the SX-28 "Super Skyrider", the result of a development effort by 12 staff engineers and analysis of more than 600 reports that included input from U.S. government engineers, commercial users, and amateur radio operators. The SX-28's distinctive art deco styling was considered sleek and strikingly modern in 1940. The radio frequency coverage was 550 kHz (0.55 MHz) to 43 MHz in six bands. The SX-28 included an Amplified AVC, a Lamb Noise Silencer, Calibrated bandspread, and Push-Pull audio output. The SX-28 was known for its "high fidelity" audio together with high sensitivity, stability and selectivity. Not available to the general public, the SX-28 saw use by various branches of U.S. and allied military and signals intelligence agencies during World War II. SX-28 receivers were often rack mounted in British government listening posts and secret listening stations for monitoring German radar and communications.
What I do know is the following - This is one really heavy beast, weighing around 35kg - and, that is not including the speaker cabinet. OK, so the speaker cabinet is evidently not original - it comes from a "His Master's Voice' Model 85T8 and houses two rather large speakers, one which is working well, the other is a little worse for wear. The Serial Number of the SX-28 is H 181157 and, according to Henry Rogers of the Western Historic Radio Museum ( a very helpful guy, if you need more info - look at his website!!) this model is likely to be from 1943. The receiver is very powerful, it runs on 110 and 220 volt and, I believe, it can also run on DC current.
So, did I mention that I know little about radios? Well, it was totally checked over by a boffin who DID know about these things - and, the left photo shows you just what was replaced to make it working well. All the valves were tested and proved to be in good working condition. It is suggested that an aerial of 35 plus metres should be used, however, I have only put up a temporary 10 metre aerial and it works just fine.
