Up for this auction is arguably about the scarcest Boer War period medallion (Laidlaw 0008b) ever minted and issued! This large silver medallion (disc only without hanger) was issued in 1902 by the Colony of Natal to Natal Zulu Chiefs in appreciation for their loyalty during the Boer War (1899-1902). The diameter is about 51 mm and the weight is 46.04 grams. It was issued unnamed to the Zulu Chiefs. It is estimated by Laidlaw that about 250 medallions were issued, and the survival rate of these 250 after 110+ years in rural Natal would be very, very low! If you collect scarce South-African medallions, especially Boer War related, this would almost be the scarcest of them all. Please note the few scratches in front of King Edward's head. The medallion used to be gilded silver, but the gilding has worn off, making it even more valuable as evidence of being issued. The under-mentioned website gives a value of $1 300 to this medallion, which in Rand terms is about R15 000. NB: This is not the small, version issued to all school children in Natal after the Boer War!
Please read more about this medallion on the website www.southafricanmedals.com by Laidlaw.
