With all the water available on the reserve, there is always opportunity for the birdwatcher to note new species. Plant life Because this area is one of the last pieces of true Africa, plant life is flourishing. The area features over 100 tree varieties and even Yellowwood and Cedar abound. Five different Protea varieties have also been noted. A Room with a View. Once (at the start of the 20th century) the destiny of those who opposed the government, the Waterberg district is today one of the hottest spots in Southern Africa. A sudden revival in the late 90's saw an increase of property values like none before. Where a hectare in this area couldn't be given away in the 80's for twenty rand, one now pays a thousand rand and upwards. Presidents, Princes, Movie Stars and Millionaires are all laying claim daily, to the last piece of unspoilt Africa. Deep in the heartland of the Waterberg, lies a little town called Vaalwater and, not far away, one can find the absolute tranquillity of Nyathi Game Reserve. Nyathi is the African name for the well known Cape Buffalo or Bos Africanus. 1750 hectares of unspoilt African Bushveld, with loads of water features, are the home of Kudu, Njala, Zebras and Leopard, living in an absolute nature wonderland. Although Nyathi Game Reserve is deep in the African bush, one does not need to pack the Land Rover and prepare for Safari. Only about 180km from Pretoria, the reserve is within easy driving distance. With tar roads most of the way and graded gravel roads closer to the reserve, the Limo will do quite nicely. Nyathi Game Reserve even boasts a light airplane landing strip.
