Gofrey Sipho Ndaba was born in 1947,one of eleven children, and has lived in his life. His fascination with art came from an early age as every time rain fell he would draw human faces in the wet soil.
He attended primary school in Soweto, but went to the Jubilee Art Center twice a week after school hours, studying under artists such as Cecil Skotness and Sidney Khumalo.
Painting became an obsession as Godfrey made portraits of all his family and friends, the artistic flair expanding into sculpture as he formed images of cattle and people from clay dug out of the river.
Godfrey completed a teachers course then went on to study at the Ndaleni Art School in Kwa|-Zulu.His first major success was for a sculpture entered in a competition at Fort Hare University Museum.
Godfrey toured the city galleries, finding they would always take some of his work. His first one man exhibition came in 1972,and to his delight and surprise was a sell out.Along with other artists he then staged group exhibitions in South Africa,Greece,Israel,Germany, and the United States.
Today Godfrey Sipho Ndaba's work features in many collection of Thabo Mbeki ,the forma president of South Africa.Godfrey is regarded as one of the best Soweto and South African artists, and passes his skills and techniques on to those he teaches.
His work is exciting and often, deeply moving a must for any collectors of African/South African art.
