Chantrierei, also known as Bat flower, Cat's whiskers or Devil flower, is an erect, rhizomatous perennial with oblong or lance-shaped, dark green leaves. Produces umbels of green flowers, each with green , brown, or black, thread-like appendages. In general, this stemless perennial, which is grown for its foliage and nodding, bell-shaped flowers, is native to West Africa and S.E. Asia. Leaves are either lance-shaped or oval and may be either entire or lobed. Soil should be moist year-round and foliage should be misted during the summer. For plants grown outdoors, soil should be acid. Fertilize with a half-strength foliar spray monthly. Your plant will be much happier if you repot it regularly, say every 2 or 3 years.
The Bat Flower grows naturally in the jungle regions of Southeast Asia so it is important to try and recreate the jungle-like environment in which it thrives. Plant bulbs individually, just below the surface of the soil, in 10” pots, in a light, well-draining potting mix. Some experts suggest using an ‘Orchid Mix’. Provide a temperature of 25-29C (75-85F) through the summer and 15-18C (60-65F) through the winter. It prefers at least 4 hours of bright, indirect sunlight a day: avoid direct sunlight.
