Product information
A Cased Set of 26 Silver Medals Depicting Pioneers of Southern Africa. Designed by Piagliari of the Cape Mint and Trevor Wood. Those designed by Trevor Wood were probably struck in Rhodesia. The set was produced and marketed in 1981 by the South African Historical Mint. Further information at: Commemorative Medals of South African Historical Interest. Only six of the medals (Dias, Retief, Pretorius, Livingstone, Selous and Hobhouse) are shown in the images. The website has generic images of all the medals.
Sterling silver. All so marked on the edge. There are alternative hallmarks, one from the Cape Mint and the other probably from Rhodesia. Mirror fields with frosted designs. Diameter 32.5 mm. Mass 20 gm (varies somewhat). There are hairline rub marks on the obverses probably from contact with the inside of the lid and some minor tarnishing. The reverses are as struck.
