The Groot Constantia 1659 Medal of Honour. This large Silver Medal was Presented to State President P.W. Botha at the Wine Harvest Festival on 2 February 1985 in recognition of the State's contribution to the South African wine industry. The medal commemorates the first Cape wine harvest recorded by Jan van Riebeeck on 2 February 1659.
The award has been presented each year since 1974. Past recipients include Anton Rupert, Jan Smuts (posthumously) and Nelson Mandela. One award is made annually and each medal is unique, struck with a special die bearing the recipient's name. I do not know if medals for the occasion are still presented. Made by Pagliari and produced at the Cape Mint. Housed within their original red leather case. Further information at: Commemorative Medals of South African Historical Interest.
