Name of Artist Norman Catherine (South African, 1949 - )
Title of work  Fook Luminous Terrier, Edition 31/100
Medium  Screenprint
Description of artwork  This is a limited edition screenprint by famous South African artist Norman Catherine (1949 -), of the Luminous Terrier from his Fook Island series. This screenprint is numbered 31/100 in lower left corner, and signed N. Catherine in pencil lower right corner.

Norman Catherine is one of South Africa's leading contemporary artists, having earned a solid reputation as critic of the apartheid regime, and educator and promoter of black artists. As both a sculptor and painter, Catherine works in an assortment of media ranging from oil, acrylic, watercolour, and airbrush, to wood, fibreglass, wire, and metal. Catherine's early work – meticulously airbrushed in a photo-realistic style – has ceded to mixed media assemblages.

Catherine grew up in East London, where he studied at the East London Technical School of Art. He began his career as a commercial artist in the early 1970s in Johannesburg. Shortly thereafter, he began collaborating with Walter Battiss on a project on Fook Island, which involved the building of Fook Manor at Hartebeespoort Dam, designing murals and merchandising.
Size  Overall size: 48cm x 69.5cm / 18.9” x 27.36”
The artwork is unframed.
Condition  The work is in an excellent condition. The paper is slightly creased on the left and right edges, due to the artwork being previously forced into a frame which was too small. There is a light brown mark in the upper middle of the work, and a light brown spot in the upper left corner section.

Restoration work completed - The work was chemically cleaned and deacidified to remove all acidic stains, and reduce and remove foxing. All tapes and tape residues were removed from the back of the work. The work was fumigated to kill all possible insect infestations. The pigment was chemically treated to enhance the colouration. The work was flattened and the creasing was reduced.
