VINTAGE PIECE FROM LONDON
RUBY AND PASTE RING IN 9CT GOLD
I really don't know too much about this ring but I am convinced it has a story to tell! I bought it from an antique dealer in London, England. On studying the hallmarks I see it bears the actual London Assay hallmark so it was made there too. The rubies are a gentle deep pink in colour and are real. The white stones are paste. Paste is a particularly heavy and very transparent "flint" glass that was popular during the early half of the 20th century for its ability to simulate the fire and brilliance of gemstones. Apparently, its something to do with the high indices of refraction that create the sought-after brilliance. Before 1940, most imitation gems were made from paste. It's an art form that is rarely used with today's jewellers. Cheaper paste jewellery made use of stones that were pressed or moulded but the better quality ones were cut and polished like real gemstones.
The hallmarks are all a little indistinct due to the ring's age but I can see the jeweller signature, the Royal crown, 375 for 9 carat gold, a faint London Assay and the date-mark, which I really can't read! It's dainty but very pretty. The white stones really do sparkle! The shank is solid gold but is quite thin.
