Sarracenia psittacina Seeds

CARNIVOROUS

Parrot Pitcher Plant

The Parrot Pitcher Plant is a delightfully strange carnivorous plant. The puffed hood of the pitchers resemble parrot heads. The pitchers grow close to the ground horizontally in a rosette pattern, the pitchers curve upwards near the end so that the mouth openings face inward toward the center of the plant. The pitcher mouth secretes sweet nectar that lures the insects to the plant. Insects enter through a hole below the puffed heads, become trapped and disoriented, down-pointing hairs help guide them to the bottom of the tubes where they are dissolved by bacteria and microorganisms. Mature plants can produce pitchers up to 6-10 inch long. Sarracenia psittacina produces deep purple-red flowers on leafless 1-2 foot stems.
Sarracenia psittacina is found in the wetter parts of boggy areas in the coastal plain from southern Georgia and northern Florida to southern Mississippi. Quite often the plants can be found near the waterline or may occasionally be submerged. Sarracenia psittacina does not require seasons as extreme as other Sarracenia.
Sarracenia do great in containers, plant in short pots that sit in pure water when they are growing. They should be top-watered regularly to maintain the oxygen levels for the roots and to keep salt levels down in the soil. Adult plants enjoy full sun outdoors. Seedlings make excellent terrarium plants without winter dormancy for up to two years. You might be able to keep them in a terrarium indefinitely. Mature plants can be planted out in a bog garden, Sarracenia are very hardy plants and can survive below freezing temperatures. Mulch where temperatures drop below zero.
