CARNIVOROUS Parrot Pitcher Plant The Parrot Pitcher Plant is a delightfully strange carnivorous plant. The puffed hood of the pitchers resemble parrot heads. The pitchers grow close to the ground horizontally in a rosette pattern, the pitchers curve upwards near the end so that the mouth openings face inward toward the center of the plant. The pitcher mouth secretes sweet nectar that lures the insects to the plant. Insects enter through a hole below the puffed heads, become trapped and disoriented, down-pointing hairs help guide them to the bottom of the tubes where they are dissolved by bacteria and microorganisms. Mature plants can produce pitchers up to 6-10 inch long. Sarracenia psittacina produces deep purple-red flowers on leafless 1-2 foot stems.
