Edward Sandeman arrived in Cape Town in March 1878 and set out on a long journey that took him by boat to Durban and then hrough the Free State and the whole of the Transvaal area. As travel accounts was very popular during this time, Sandeman used the opportunity to make notes of his observations a long the way and was successful in getting his account published. He tells of meetings with people along the way, but do not mention many individuals by name.
