After completing his schooling at the Helpmekaar High school in Johannesburg Andre furthered his academic achievements by earning a BA degree at the University of Pretoria as well as a MA in visual and fine arts . At Pretoria teachers college he also earned himself a Higher Teachers Diploma which he completed exceptionally .
Andre also attended Unisa where he achieved a BA in Sculpture art . After a short career as a teacher he was appointed as Art lecturer . In 1962 he was promoted to senior lecturer , then head of the department . Preceding his early retirement in 1982 he was Vice-Rector for 7 years at the College of education .
In the field of art education Andre made several contributions . He was a member of various committees both provincial and national who were responsible for coordinating the syllabus of art education for schools and tertiary institutes . He was chairman of the Transvaal Educational Department . He was also involved in determining the policy and functions of the Pretoria museum .
For many years Andre was the chairman of the National Art Association of South Africa . In 1976 he was awarded a bursary and did research in nine countries regarding the implementation of television as an education medium for art .
Andre had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions by invitation . He also received many commissions from Government for paintings including portraits of several ministers .
Many of his paintings are in collections in South Africa as well as abroad .
