Peter Ziyo Sibeko [1940]-[2013]

Sibeko ,who is self-taught ,started drawing at the age of twelve.His brother Walter Sibeko and the artist David Mbele encouraged him and created opportunities for him to become a full-time professional artist.

Sibeko has become a well-know artist and owner of the Soweto art Gallery in central Johannesburg.Through his interest in South African art his Gallery has become an important venue for young artist to exhibit their creative work.

Since 1980 Sibeko's work has been included in important group exhibitions which toured overseas.In 1989 he participated in an exhibition entitled Soweto Images which was on show in London and in the same year his work was included in an exhibition in memory of Dr Martin Luther King help at the Athlone University in Atlanta  ,Georgia.His first solo exhibition was help in 1990 at the Friends of the Earth Gallery in Australia.

Sibeko portrays township life in Soweto in oils on sand a mixed medium which has developed with great success .He also works in Pastels,Water colours, charcoal,oils and pencil.

His work is represented in the collection of ABSA Bank as well as many private collections in South Africa and abroad.
