More on artist

A Boccasile was a prisoner of war during World War II. At first he was held at Baviaanspoort Prison Camp and thereafter he was transferred to Zonderwater Prison.

During 1942, with close to 70 000 prisoners at the Zonderwater Camp, the morale of the prisoners was very low until a certain Col. HF Prinsloo was appointed camp Commander in January 1943. He not only turned the camp around by increasing the prisoner's self esteem, he also established on orchestra, craft exhibitions and art classes for prisoners.

Lieut. JA Stark (War Ref. No. 228298) was awarded a Baton Boy at Zonderwater, being the Italian prisoner A. Boccasile.

Boccasile was one of many prisoners who were commissioned at the time to build the road, the well known Du Toits Kloof Pass. Boccasile was clearly inspired by the beautiful scenery he had conceived during this time passing through Meiringspoort and the Karoo.

His paintings produced during 1943 are witness to the scenery on canvass. The paint and canvass was provided by Lieut. J.A. Starck.

(Information supplied by a family member of Lieut. J.A.Starck, Me. Issabella Kamffer)
