Sydney Carter, Pastel painting, South african art, Cape Dutch buildings, Fine Art,

Sydney CARTER

Sydney Carter was a versatile and prolific painter who could switch with ease from landscape to portraiture to book illustration or to murals. His style was academic in the late-19th-Century English tradition, with overtones of Impressionism. His brushwork and colour are characterized by broken strokes and patches of light on dark which relate him to several contemporaneous British painters and to Gwelo Goodman and William Timlin among South African artists. Such technique adapted readily to the medium of gouache, for which Carter is best known.

The painter travelled widely around South Africa, recording views of people and landscapes; but he won his broadest public following with his many studies of acacia trees – the “blue gums” which fringed the outskirts of Johannesburg. He was not in any way an originator of aesthetic form; however his characteristics descriptive style is unmistakable and has retained its popularity among the general public.
