The IUCN Red Listed and critically endangered Black Rhino is featured in this 24 carat gold 2 coin launch set which forms part of the Safari through Africa series from the SA Mint. The set contains a mintmarked 1 ounce gold coin, a half ounce Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) medallion and a Sterling Silver Black Rhino portrait with a 0.015 carat diamond set in the eye.

The 2010, 1 oz (R 100) pure gold Natura Launch Coin with a maximum mintage of only 500, depicts the critically endangered Black Rhinoceros (Dìceros bicornis) together with a mintmark of the "Endangered Wildlife Trust" (EWT) logo. The EWT was established in 1973 and for the past 35 years this non-profit organisation has been dedicated to conserving threatened species and ecosystems in southern Africa.

Despite the past highly successful projects to increase the Black and White rhino populations, there has been an alarming increase in the number of poaching incidences in recent years! Once again the rhinos in Africa teeter on the brink of extinction as sophisticated poachers make use of helicopters, GPS tracking and accurate weaponry which make it easier to find and kill these magnificent animals.

The EWT has initiated the "Strengthening the Security of Rhino in South Africa" project to improve the protection of southern Africa's rhinos. This project helps with training workshops of management and anti-poaching personnel and facilitates communication, information sharing and networking between the relevant stakeholders.

In support of this important project, the South African Mint Company has created a pure gold 1/2 oz medallion which pays tribute to the EWT. The obverse features the emblem of the EWT and a collection of threatened species*, whilst the reverse depicts a Black Rhinoceros. Part of the proceeds earned from this medallion will be donated to the "Strengthening the Security of Rhino in South Africa" project.

The Black Rhino on the R100 Natura is depicted walking on the year "2010", heading into its uncertain future. It is for this reason that the South African Mint Company contributes towards this worthy project in the hope that future South African generations will be able to view this prehistoric giant walking free and safely in its natural surroundings.
