Q
Hi,i would like to give each of my guests(120) at my wedding a tree seed to go and plant. Most guests are from jhb and the rest nelspruit. What tree would you reccommend that is indigenous and will survive jhb conditions,i know nelspruit is quite easy to grow most plants, its jhb i am worried about?

Also meant to point out,the seed/pod would have to be dry so i could leave in a pretty bag on the table as the gift.

Hi Margaret,
Thanks for the interest shown. I want to suggest Sclerocarya birrea or Marula as it is commonly known, as it is considered by the Zulu as the "marriage tree," for it is a symbol of fertility and is used in a cleansing ritual before marriage. But, unfortunately we are currently sold out on that species but hope to have more seeds in 2 weeks time. Can you wait? Alternatively you could go with Dombeya rotundifolia, Dichrostachys cinerea, Combretum erythrophyllum, Zanthoxylum capense, Rhus lancea, Ilex mitis, Grewia occidentalis, Ehritia rigida, Dodonaea angustifolia or Diospyros whyteana.
Kind regards,
Jonathan

Dear Christos,
Thanks for the interest shown and the orders placed. Due to space restrictions here we cannot give you all the requirements. We'll email the germination and care instructions for each species to you, along with your tracking number. Being South African indigenous trees they will all generally need an average temperature of 21 - 26 °C. Keep the seeds damp during germination and, with the exception of a few, grow in full sun.
Best regards,
Jonathan
