This book is a classic among African-specific bushcraft and survival manuals and is still one of the best, despite being written 50 years ago. The book consists of eleven chapters covering emergencies, first aid, signalling, shelters, fire, locating water, food, dangerous animals, traps and snares, way-finding, camping, and tracking. The chapters are clearly written and contain a wealth of pertinent information. Illustrated with helpful line drawings.
Colonel Grainger wrote the book with the assistance of well-known experts in Rhodesian ecology, zoology and botany, such as Ray Smithers and R.B. Drummond. The bulk of the book, however, is based on notes compiled by Allan Savory (acknowledged at the beginning of the book as "Lt. C.R. Savory" by Col. Grainger), who was an ecologist with the Rhodesian National Parks and served in the Rhodesia Army Territorial Force. Savory introduced and taught bushcraft and tracker training to C Squadron of the SAS.
