On offer is a very scarce proving cover with enclosed letter from Brandvlei (22-08-1882) via Calvinia (25-08-1882) to Cape Town (29-08-1882) franked 2d with Barred Oval Numeral Canceller number "195" and single circle handstamp not recorded by Putzel.

Brandvlei postal agency opened in 1882, the year of the cover on offer. The town is in southern Bushmanland some 140kms northeast of Calvinia. Tradtion has it that the town was named after a trekboer "Old Brand", who used to outspan regularly next to the huge vlei which today supports a large salt-exporting industry.
