The shortage of half penny stamps and the interim period 1s 1 1/2d rate to Europe.

Between  the 1881 Convention of Pretoria and the London Convention which recognised the ZAR as an independent state, Bradbury Wilkinson's QV postage and revenue stamps continued to be used until, in February 1883, stamps of the First Republic were re-issued. Datestamps and obliterators inscribed "ZAR" were only re-introduced again in 1884.

The 6d letter rate between the ZAR and the Cape, and the 7 1/2d rate from the Cape Colony to members of the UPU, resulted in a rate of 13 1/2d or 1s 1 1/2d. As 1/2d stamps were in short supply - only 12,000 had been supplied in September 1880 - stamps were either bisected or the rate rounded up.

On offer is an 1882 (11 November) cover from Pretoria with First British Occupation datestamp to Hannover, Germany with 5 x 3d adhesives (Bourne Head) to make up the correct rounded up rate, tied with target-type canceller number "1" for Pretoria and red 2 1/2d accountancy mark. Backstamps show transit through Cape Town (21 November), London (12 December) to Germany (13 December).

An important and attractive item.

Second stamp from left damaged and roughly opened at back. As per scans below.
