Adenium, commonly known as Desert Rose produce flowers in striking reds, pinks and mauves; red-and-white bi-coloured flowers are fairly common. They are interesting caudiciform plants and make ideal pot plants. Known to occur in more arid regions, adeniums are sensitive to frost and waterlogged soils. The plants are usually deciduous during winter or the dry season. Adeniums do well in warmer gardens and their rather handsome flowers make them an attractive addition to a garden.

         

Adenium is a small genus of succulent shrubs that produces swollen stems, often with peculiar forms. When the starry flowers appear in masses, the appearance of the plant is completely transformed. The genus exhibits a great deal of natural variation in the form of the stems, form and colour of the flowers, and overall size.

Adenium is closely related to Pachypodium but is distinguished by the absence of stipules at the base of the leaves. The genus is not to be confused with Adenia which also has caudiciform stems or rootstocks, but they are green and the stems are usually twining. They are popular as indoor houseplants providing they receive a few hours of sunlight a day. They are well suited for growing in pots and rockeries.

Adenium multiflorum, commonly known as Impala Lily, is the best known of the South African indigenous adeniums. It flowers in winter when most of the surrounding vegetation is rather dull in comparison to the brilliant white, pink, crimson, red and bi-coloured flowers that cover these plants when in full bloom. Horticulturally, the impala lily is greatly valued for its flowers. A large plant in full bloom is among the most decorative of all succulents, and is highly prized in gardens where the climate allows it to be grown in the open. Adenium multiflorum is planted extensively in the rest camps of the Kruger National Park, for example.
