The regiment was established 26 August 1857 in Greenmarket Square, Cape Town; at that time, it was known as the Cape Town Volunteer Artillery.
The name of the regiment has changed several times over the years.  In 1867, the Duke of Edinburgh visited Cape Town, he conferred upon them the designation Prince Alfred’s Own Cape Town Volunteer Artillery (PAOCTVA). This was changed 30 years later to Prince Alfred’s Own Cape Artillery (PAOCA), and in 1903, to Prince Alfred’s Own Cape Field Artillery (PAOCFA). In 1932, the regiment became Cape Field Artillery (Prince Alfred’s Own); in 1960 it was briefly renamed the Regiment Tygerberg, until the name was changed back to Cape Field Artillery in 1963, which it has retained until today.
