Very good +. A lovely, complete set in surprisingly good condition. Corners bumped and rubbed with minor loss. Spine ends rubbed with minor loss. Some minor browning in parts of the text-blocks.
Ex-libris (not overtly so) Louis Weyers, great grandson of Jan Smuts. Jan Smuts was the Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and again from 1939 until 1948.

One of the engravers had a connection to South Africa. Born in Edinburgh, James Stewart (1791 – 1863), was articled to the engraver Robert Scott (his fellow pupil being John Burnet). Financial woes caused him to emigrate to the Cape Colony in 1833, however, the 6th Xhosa war broke out and he lost everything. Eventually he became a magistrate and a member of the legislature and died in South Africa in 1863.
