A RARE PIECE FROM THE LONDON WAR MUSEUM
THESE ARE A GREAT PAIR OF HORSE HOOF INKWELLS FROM THE BOER WAR. THEY STAND APRX 9 cm HIGH AND MOUNTED WITH SILVER EVEN THE HOOVES ARE SOLID SILVER ( with mark ) THE DETAIL IS BRILLIANT AND THEY ARE VERY HIGH QUALITY PIECES. THE CONDITION IS GOOD FOR THE AGE, APART FROM SOME SMALL CRACKS IN ONE HOOF (probably occurring in the mounting process). MAYBE A FEW SMALL DINGS BUT OVERALL VERY GOOD FOR AGE. THE INSCRIPTION IN PHOTO READS ... THE INKWELLS HERE ARE MADE FROM THE HOOVES OF AN ARTILLERY HORSE WHO SERVED DURING THE BOER WAR OF 1899 to 1902. HE WAS A GELDING CALLED PRINCE, HE WAS SO FONDLY REMEMBERED FOR HIS LOYAL SERVICE THAT HIS HOOVES WERE MADE INTO INKWELLS. WITH EVEN THE SHOES BEING MADE FROM SOLID SILVER. INSCRIBED WITH THE EPITAPH.... PRINCE 1897 - 1911. THESE ITEMS ARE FROM THE WHITEHALL THEATRE OF WAR COLLECTION/LONDON WAR MUSEUM WHICH IS NOW TRAFALGAR STUDIOS. |
