I have three (3) original Cape of Good Hope documents currently on auction on Bid-or-Buy signed respectively by:- 1) Lieutenant-General Sir Henry "Harry" George W. Smith (b. 1787), Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope. Signed 8th of August 1850. 2) Major-Gen. Sir George Thomas Napier (b. 1784) Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope. Signed 15th April 1841. 3) Lieutenant-General Charles C. Hay (b. 1809) Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. Signed 28 July 1870. The document is also signed by Charles Bell, Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony and the designer the well-known Cape of Good Hope triangular stamp. The first item you are bidding on here is a Land Grant signed by Sir Harry Smith on 8th of August 1850. Among the many of his titles on the document are “…Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Settlement of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa …” Sir Harry was ordered to the Cape of Good Hope in 1828, where he commanded a division in the Xhosa Wars of 1834-36. In 1835 he accomplished the feat of riding from Cape Town to Grahamstown in less than six days. His wife Juana gave her name to Ladysmith in Natal. Harrismith in the Free State was named after Smith himself. A further town, Aliwal North in the Eatern Cape also marks Smith's connection with South Africa. Please note that the document have supporting tape at the back (professionally done). Please also note the huge size in the first picture compared to a 30 cm (12 inch) ruler next to it. The following picture is of the top part of the document – it shows yellow on the scan, but in the first picture above (taken by digital camera) you can see its true color) Following picture is of the bottom part of document (it is too big to scan as one document) - it is in better condition than the pictures suggests. Here is Sir Harry Smith’s original signature...
