Dean Smith and Grace 13*30 centre lathe

R22,000.00

Dean Smith and Grace, the old "Rolls Royce" of lathes. All beds/slideways profesionally reground. Digital readout. Quick change toolpost. 330mm swing by 760mm. Working condition, but thread cutting engaging nut is missing, and clutch mechanism a bit worn, nothing a good toolmaker can't fix. This machine is by far the heaviest machine in it's class. Solid cast iron base, no sheet metal anywhere, machine weighs over 2 tons. Might be a good one for a retrofit. Situated in Plettenberg Bay, but transport can be arranged at a very reasonable rate. R22 000 o.n.c.o

Q:
Hi there, I notice the 330 swing, if you could estimate, what would you recon the max turning dia. Would be. I do a lot of 260mm round discs out of 20mm mild steel plate. The chuck size is not a problem, can add a bigger one, my main aim is to get a good used machine and retrofit to cnc. Kind regards, Gordon - Asked by gpfly28 (3)

Hi Gordon. My appologies for the slow response. To be honest I don't know about the maximum swing and I'm not at the machine at present (I'm in Gauteng, machine in Plettenberg Bay at a friends place). But similar machine advertised online at http://www.surplusrecord.com/listings8/627388.html Not sure if you mean swing over saddle/carriage or swing over bed. Max diam. over bed is about 330mm and over carriage is about 210mm. If you doing disks (chucking work) this will do fine. Another interesting article at http://www.lathes.co.uk/dsg/ Hope this answers your question. Regards, Greg.
