A stunning Spinel, earth mined in the 'Mecca' of the Spinel world - Mogok, in Burma (Myanmar). It is flawless, and has sensational fire and sparkle. The image does not really portray the colour too well, and makes it appear to be far too purple - it's a stunning Spinel, with even hints of bronze apparent - especially under artificial lighting.
By now, most on here will know that I am a BIG fan of the Spinel. I cannot deny it. The Spinel epitomises what gems should be - totally natural.
THE SPINEL
Spinel is a single refractive stone with an index as high as 1.72-1.80. This property makes it a friendly and forgiving stone to cut. Its hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale is an advantage for both cutter and stone setter. Spinels specific gravity is 3.58-3.61. It is a natural and treatment-free stone - neither glass filling nor heat treatments. Cut by the spirits? Might be, but absolutely not burned, irradiated, glass injected or lubricated by the devils.
The incorruptible nature of the Spinel is the main reason behind the renewed fascination of todays international gem markets for it - because it is exactly what gemstones used to be, charming, very rare, occasionally included, but always genuine.
Prices for premium quality Spinel's are currently going through the roof, mainly due to the fact that it is a pure, and untreated, gemstone.
