Revered (Dominee) Alewijn (Alwyn) Burger’s ‘Staten-Generaal’ P.O.W Camp Bible from Shahjahanpur Camp in India.

A rare survivor, which will appeal to Anglo-Boer War and church history collectors alike.  Dominee Alwyn Burger (of the Middelburg Commando) was a author and 'Veldprediker by die Republikeinse magte tydens die Tweede Vryheidoorlog', and 'een van die min predikate wat na die slagveld saamgegaan het’.  Ds Burger's experiences during the Anglo-Boer War, and POW camp life, are recounted in his book, WorsteljareThe bible has a inscription by Ds Burger, on the bible’s front free end page.

Ds Burger was present when Presidents Kruger and Steyn parted ways at Hectorspruit, and President Kruger departed for Lourenco Marques. Ds Burger, was captured on 20 February 1902 at Nooitgedacht, and interned at Shahjahanpur camp in India.  Ds Burger is pictured here (back row, forth from left) in Bhimtal, India, in 1902, with fellow Boer prisoners.

Several pieces of original period ephemera inserted amongst the bible’s pages, including a song sheet Een Bede om Hulp geslaakt door de Gemartelde Boerenvrouen in de Concentratiekampen (Ds Burger's wife, Annie, was interned in a concentration camp) and a original studio photograph (ca. 1900) of Ds Paul Nel, a leading figure in Church and also one of the ‘predikante wat hom in die Anglo-Boereoorlog by die vegtende burgers aangesluit het’.

Ds Burger was a example of the way in which the later missionary movement in the Dutch Reformed Church originated in the Anglo-Boer War, which led to a spiritual awakening in the church, and according to D Crafford (Aan God al die Dank), many souls were led to introspection, in the commandos and in the concentration and prisoner of war camps, that they saw as punishment of God. After the war, Ds Burger was instrumental in the establishment of the ‘Burger’ mission station in Sekhukhuneland. Janie Burger, wife of Ds Burger (and daughter of the Treasurer-General of the Transvaal Republic), was one of the pioneers of the Transvaal Vroue Sendingvereniging, established in 1905.

Description: Bijbel, dat is de Gansche Heilige Schrift, vervattende al de Kanonijke Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments, published in Utrecht, 1900. Condition: The bible’s covers and spine are worn and bumped, and the spine is shaken but intact, as to be expected fro such a well traveled book.  Provenance by descent, including a gift inscription by Ds Burger and his wife, Janie, on the bible’s front free end page.

Also in included in provenance, the previous owner’s (who was also part of the Middelburg commando) annotated copy of PS Lombaard’s Uit Die Dagboek van ‘n Wildeboer, with numerous references to Ds Burger’s participation in the Anglo-Boer War: Lombard, P. S. (author), and A. M. Jackson (compiler); 1939; original dark green cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; lightly rubbed with some foxing.
