Correctly named WW11 War Medal to Thomas Ferguson Alexander Wyley. He was a 37 year old unqualified Dispenser from Observatory, Cape Town who attested into the 4th Battalion Special Service Brigade on 26.10.1939 at Voortrekkerhoogte as a Private with Service Number 59948. He was promoted to A/Cpl on 02.03.1940 then Corporal on 30.01.1941 and finally to Sergeant on 01.04.1943. Being attached to the South African Internment Corps and initially stationed at Zonderwater he was transferred to the Internment Corps at Koffiefontein. During the Second World War a large internment camp was opened in the town, with 2000 Italian and some German prisoners of war, and some 800 South African internees, who were suspected of being pro-Nazi being housed there. Among the internees was John Vorster who served as the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1966 to 1978 and as the fourth State President of South Africa from 1978 to 1979. The remains of murals painted by the Italian POWs can still be viewed in the town as can the barracks in which they were held. Wyley died 06.11.1945. Photo and service documents included.
