Sorry I am only replying now, my internet connection was down. The soapnuts do not dissolve, but rather release the saponin (active ingredient) from the shell of the fruit. You put about 6 shells in a little bag which is supplied with the soapnuts and simply chuck this in with your wash load, they can be reused several times. When they are used up they can be composted as they are totally bio-degradable. You can also make a soap from them by boiling a handfull in about a liter of water, straining this and using it for washing dishes etc. I make a soap by boiling a handfull of soapnuts and the peel of an orange in a liter of water. I then add a table spoon of salt (preservative) and some vinegar (preservative & degreaser) - I clean virtually my whole house with this. Just strain and decant into a spray bottle, works well for everything including the dirty ring around the bath.
