HPJ very proudly bring this extremely rare true yellow natural Topaz to BoB. In keeping with our policy of excellence we bring you this extraordinary gemstone. The image leaves a lot to be desired, the gemstone itself is to be highly desired !

To my knowledge there only 30 of these astonishing Topaz’s in existence from this small ‘garimpeiro’ mine in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. To date, HPJ have acquired 17 of them.

I have valued them at R3,000 per carat, which I think is VERY conservative.

Brazil produces the greatest variety of gems and semi-precious stones in the world. Mining is very much a part of the Brazilian culture and prospecting is a way of life for many people. If a mineral deposit is found in an area where no exploration license has been granted then prospectors, called ‘garimpeiros’ can mine the area using manual tools to extract the minerals.

Topaz mining in the vicintity of Ouro Prêto dates back to the 1700s. Topaz was originally mined in the ‘Topaz Belt’ of Minas Gerais, which was comprised of three distinct regions (Dom Bosco, Rodrigo Silva, Saramenha) near the mining town of Ouro Preto  In 1768, the Portuguese government designated all gem deposits in the region as property of the crown, under state control.
