Literally means "thick cereus", this small genus contrains two of the heaviest species in the Cactaceae, P.pringlei and P.weberi.

The species are branched, from 4 - 13m tall, with white nocturnal flowers and very spiny fruit.

A relative of the Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea), it can grow to 13m tall, with a main trunk 60cm thick.

The mature branches are largely spineless and bear 8cm long, white flowers. 

In cultivation, it can produce 30cm of growth in one season.

It will note tolerate frost and is grown from seed.

Stunning cacti at a size of 5.8m tall and +/- 30-40cm wide.
