HISTORY
The name may be new, but this mineral has been known since 1801 when it was discovered in the URALS. Its Gemological name is Diaspore.
Gems that change colour under different lighting are rare, and Diaspore is attracting buyers who are drawn to this unique quality. Under natural or fluorescent light, Diaspore has a kiwi green colour with flashes of yellow. Under incandescent lighting, this shifts to a champagne colour and when exposed to subdued lighting, such as candlelight, Diaspore has a pinkish colour. The larger the stone, the more pronounced the colour change effect.
It was first faceted as a Gemstone in the 1980's, but was not commercially mined until recently. Interestingly Diaspore deposits are now found in a number of locations world wide including Arizona, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, UK and Chine. However, to date, the only gem-quality material has been mined in Turkey - hence Zultanite.
