Telltale's "The Wolf Among Us" is a superb adventure game that takes well-known fairy tale characters and puts them in a dark, gritty film noir-style murder mystery. I say film noir because the main protagonist acts similarly to a private eye and is constantly lighting a cigarette, the game is full of seedy locations, including shadowy back alleys, bars and night clubs, the women are all femme fatales, and don't expect a perfect happy ending. You play as Bigby (aka the Big Bad Wolf), who acts as the sheriff of the tightknit community of Fabletown and looks after its many residents. He appears normal at a glance, always unshaven and unkempt, wearing a white shirt and tie. That is, until you make him angry and his claws come out. After a head unexpectedly turns up without its body attached, you and Snow (Snow White looking like a hardened lawyer) start investigating the trail of bread crumbs, inevitably leading to a tangled web that seems to somehow involve everyone. This is a surprisingly mature and violent game. There's a particularly gruesome scene involving a broken arm that is not shy about lingering on the open wound. But there are also moments of levity. If you can envision a solemnly serious conversation between Bigby and one of the Three Little Pigs, who use expletives like it's commonplace, you'll know exactly what I mean. Much of the game has a sly undercurrent of humor. The inspired, beautiful cel-shaded visuals make it all feel like a graphic novel brought to life. Telltale has a style to their games that they have been perfecting since "Sam & Max." You point and click on objects within the environment to examine them, or make quick decisions, usually with dialogue choices, sometimes actions, through button prompts and QTEs
