Pierneef Linocut Print, Union Buildings from Prinsenhof
*Please read carefully and ask questions if you are unsure*
This was bought in the early 1990s when the Pierneef Museum in Pretoria closed, but never framed.
At the time there were a few hundred prints found in the museum (as it was closing) which were not dated nor signed nor numbered by the artist. They were all on acid free paper, some had lino black ink stains/spots and roller marks but all of them had the exact dimensions as the original linocut's as provided in reference texts like "Die hout en linosniee van JH Pierneef" by FEG Nilant Published by Balkema in 1974.
The Museum decided to sell these as PRINTS (i.e. NOT original linocuts but a print of the original) and in collaboration with Marita Pierneef who held the copyright, the museum had Pierneef's signature PRINTED on these, as well as the linocut's title, in this case "Union Buildings from Prinsenhof". This is why the Copyright statement is PRINTED on the left lower corner of this PRINT.
I bought nearly all these Linocut Prints the Museum had at the time and have sold them over the years, and I still have a number of these items.
Still in good condtion. Size of physical portion of print: 28cm x 36cm
Prinsenhof is where the University of Pretoria's Medical Faculty where trained in the past, and to some extent still is.
