To Test Authenticity and Quality of Pearls, Observe the Following:
- Seems Suspicious: Any Seams / Ridges from Plastic Beads / Coated Beads where they were Joined Artificially
- Trial by Fire: Heat a Needle until it glows Orange, Touch the Side of it to the Pearl (Plastic Melts, Real Pearls Do Not)
- Losing Appeal: Peeling / Chipping of Outer Layers (Especially at Drill Holes in Necklaces) which Suggests Coated Shell / Beads
- Uniformity: Artificial Pearls are usually Very Symmetrical and Similar in Shape and Color - Genuine Pearls are Formed in Various Conditions (Hot, Cold, Calm, Stormy Weather) over time and may have Less Round Shapes and Variable Hues / Luster
- Colour Me Crazy: Differences in Saturation or Tones of Hues also show Real Nacre, as imitations will be the same Colour and Tone all Around and may also Seem to either Lack Luster or Have Too Much Gloss (Too Faded or Too Shiny)
- Biting Off More Than You Can Chew: Still Not Certain? The Final Test (Save this for Last) is a bit strange, but lightly wipe a pearl to clean it (hygiene counts!) and Very Lightly Run it Against the "Sharp" Part of your Teeth (preferably your top front teeth) - Real Pearls have a Slight Abrasive / Gritty Feel to Them (it might send chills down your spine!). Fake Pearls / Beads are Slippery Smooth and have No Resistance to Other Hard Surfaces
