The Standard Bank national Arts festival has always attempted to organise exhibitions that would advance thought and awareness of the visual arts in South Africa. these exhibitions have been collections of work not assembled before, innovative curatorship of historical or contemporary works, or shows which critically address theories and histories of Fine arts.
this exhibition and the book which accompanies it, three Sculptors/Three Readers is another exciting first for the Festival. it is an innovative development which serves several very important purposes. It specifically encourages theoreticians and art historians to work in close collaboration with living and practising artists. it builds on and extends investigation of the much needed exposure of contemporary art produced in our country, and it provides an invaluable research and reference document for academic and scholarly investigation, school instruction and the general information and enrichment of the public. This is the first festival exhibition which pilots the idea of artist and commentator working in close communion. the fruits of this collaboration have issued in a published scholarly work of reference of the highest order. We certainly hope that this development will encourage other artists and writers to collaborate in similar ways for future festivals in Grahamstown. the pioneering efforts of this exhibition and its accompanying volume have shown a direction which can and should enrich the future of art in South Africa in highly significant ways....."
