" Elsa Smithers was the March Hare, the 'Mad One'. Elsa was certainly a hare, for she rushed through life, gathering every experience that a woman can have.

She was born in 1862 in a turbulent country - the South African Republic, where the Sekukuni Rising, the Boer War, and the Gold Rushes seemed almost to be everyday affairs.

Many of the famous characters of South African history came to Elsa Smither's house during her childhood and married life: She met Jameson and Rhodes, Haggard and Bailey were visitors, and Pretorius, Burgers, and Kruger were friends of her family.

This is an intimate and exciting book. it is the story of a remarkable woman and the history of an age of diamonds and gold that changed South Africa.
