Uit die Hebreeus Vertaal deur Rabbyn Dr. M Romm. First translation of the synagogue liturgy into Afrikaans; first edition published 1952. The translator, Moses Romm, was one of South Africa's leading Torah scholars, with rabbinic ordination from his native Lithuania, a law degree from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. from Columbia. In the 1930s and 1940s, before moving to Johannesburg, he served as chief rabbi of Bloemfontein, capital of the former Boer republic of the Orange Free State. He dedicates his prayer book "Aan Alle Stigters van die Afrikanervolk Opgedra"--to all the dedicated founders of the Afrikaner people. Original black boards with Hebrew and Afrikaans gilt titles. 115 pages, alternating Afrikaans/Hebrew script. Good condition for its age. Spine split after introductions and illustrated facing page loose, spine lettering faded, slight wear to corners- more pictures available on request. A stunning piece of "Boere-Jood"/Africana and Judacea history and dedicated, dated and signed by Dr. M. Romm. There's a later dedication from previous owner. Tracked postage is R45.00.
