THE ILLUSTRATORS:
Borne was designed by Carine Nguz & Bia van Deventer.
Originally from the DRC and based in Cape Town, Carine Nguz is an award-winning graphic designer. She works independently on creative projects for a diverse range of clients.
Graphic designer Bia van Deventer enjoys working in as many mediums and styles as possible – and thrives on diversity.
THE TOY
Inspired by Lauren Beukes' new novel, Zoo City, the Zoo City Bares are very limited edition vinyl blanks, donated by the Cape Town-based am i collective and decorated by some of South Africa's leading illustrators.
The Bares are 40cm / 16 inches tall (see scale reference) and individually customised.
THE CAUSE:
All proceeds from the sale of The Bares will go to The Suitcase Project which helps refugee children from war-torn African countries that have arrived in Johannesburg without parents, friends or family. The Suitcase Project tries to help them deal with the trauma of their flight and arriving in a strange, sometimes hostile adoptive country.
THE BOOK:
Zoo City is a juju noir about an unfamilar Johannesburg full of familiars, crime, refugees, magic and damaged people, the astonishing second novel from the author of Moxyland.
