"The following pages only claim to give a general survey of the life of the Cape colonists during the eighteenth century. A social history of that period, in the academic sense, has still to be written. To understand the history of the Cape Colony we should have a knowledge of the colonists themselves their life, manners and customs, as they were actors in the drama of South Africa. Details of their social life will be found scattered thoughout the pages of many volumes by travellers, and an effort has now been made to summarise these and add to them what can be found in the official records."
