The First Republic (1858 - 1877)
Multi-ring Obliterators
The first obliterators of this type were used from 1869, and varied from four concentric rings (some with a dot at the centre) and also three-ring obliterators. A sub-type consisting of "Z.A.R." enclosed within two rings was issued to Kaapsche Hoop in the early days of the second ZAR period.
On offer is a very scarce cover from Kaapsche Hoop Goudvelden (2 March 1885) with special circular relief-type cds via Pretoria (5 March 1885) to Port Elizabeth (12 March 1885) franked 4d to make up the letter rate from the ZAR to the Cape, and tied with the two-ring target type canceller with "ZAR" at centre.
Condition as per scans.
