Another extremely rare and exceedingly beautiful gemstone from HPJ this weekend.

Oligoclase is a very rare (in gemstone quality) Feldspar comprising 70-90% Albite and 10-30% Anorthite.

The name Oligoclase derived from the Greek ‘oligos’ - little, and ‘clasein’ - to break, because the mineral was thought to have a less perfect cleavage than Albite.

It was named was by August Breithaupt in 1826.

This is a beautiful specimen, and very very rare in this size combined with such good clarity.
