ROYAL DOULTON FIELD MARSHALS JANNIE SMUTS AND MONTY MONTGOMERY TOBY JUGS
Here I am offering two Royal Doulton Toby Jugs of two Field Marshal's that every South African historian knows about. Both in absolute excellent condition and both early Royal Doulton, both very collectable but one very rare and sought after. Read here about the Jannie Smuts mug. "A rare Royal Doulton character jug / toby mug of Field Marshal Smuts. This large jug was modeled by Harry Fenton and hand-painted in England. It was produced between 1946-1948 and numbers D6198.
This delightful character jug depicts Smuts in his Field Marshal's uniform with the South African emblem, the Springbok forming the handle. The jug was only issued for two years as it was withdrawn when he lost the election in 1948 and has become quiet rare and highly sought after. Originally for every jug sold one Shilling was donated to Mrs. Smuts Comfort Fund for South African Troops.
Smuts stands approximately 6 1/2 inches tall (large) and is in superb condition (no cracks or chips).
It is listed in the Charlton Standard Catalogue Character Jug 10th Edition on page 357 and in A Century of Royal Doulton Character & Toby Jugs on page 307. Listed book value of $2000" Extract from Ruby Lane seller Gryphon's Nest who sold a jug like this for $1699
