Op die 20ste Oktober 1900 het hy Lourenco Marques met die Hollandse oorlogskip “Die Gelderland” verlaat en na Europa gereis. Paul Kruger is in opdrag van die ZAR regering na Europa gestuur om moontlike oorlogshulp vir die Boere te probeer beding.
