"A Hawaii overprint note is one of a series of banknotes (one silver certificate and three Federal Reserve Notes) issued during World War II as an emergency issue after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent of the overprints was to easily distinguish US currency captured by Japanese forces in the event of an invasion of Hawaii and render the bills useless. Silver certificates were a form of paper currency produced from 1878 - 1964 and were issued as a type of representative money. Initially made in response to the Fourth Coinage Act which placed the United States under the gold standard, the bills were meant to be redeemed for their face value in silver coin and later from June 1967 - June 1968 in raw silver bullion."
