The name "Witwatersrand" described the geographical area that included the richest gold reef in the world, and was the term - often abbreviated to the "Rand" or "Reef" - used to refer to the area from Springs in the east to Randfontein in the west. Various post offices were opened on the Rand - with Johannesburg the principal one - and one of them, in 1887, named Witwatersrand itself.
