The klein lewerplant (Pleiospilos compactus ssp. canus) is a mesemb that forms rounded clusters of branches, each branch having four leaves in opposite pairs. The leaves are purplish at the edges and are variable in size and shape. The upper surfaces are flat, the lower surfaces rounded and the tips keeled. Flowers are yellow or rarely white. This Pleiospilos species occur in the Tanqua Karoo and also in the southern Great Karoo and on the northern margin of the Little Karoo, on shale gravel flats.
