A Huge Gilded Medal to Commemorate the Centenary of the Battle of Majuba Hill 1881-1981. Produced by Pagliari of the Cape Mint in 1981.
The battle of Battle of Majuba Hill took place on 27 February 1881. It was the decisive battle of the First Anglo-Boer War, a resounding victory for the Boers and a humiliation for Britain.
Gilded. Proof-like with frosted designs and mirror fields. Plain edge with no marks. Neither is there a mark elsewhere to indicate the composition of the underlying metal. These medals have been sold by reputable auction houses who claim that they are made of silver. Gilded copper medals exist but these are stamped REPLICA IN COPPER on the edge.
